What are viruses and how can I protect my computer?
Viruses are human-made software programs created to harm other computers and networks. You can protect your computer from viruses by using our junk mail and virus filter and by installing an anti-virus program on your computer. More Info...
What is SPAM and what can I do to stop it?
Spam is unsolicited and unwanted e-mail. This is becoming an increasing problem for both Internet users and ISPs. Spam uses our e-mail server resources and your time. You can greatly reduce the amount of junk mail by using our Postini junk mail and virus filter.
What are Pop-ups and Spyware?
Pop-up ads are a form of online advertising intended to increase web traffic or capture email addresses. It works when certain web sites open a new web browser window to display advertisements. A less intrusive variation on the pop-up window is the pop-under advertisement. This opens a new browser window, but in the background, so as not to interrupt the user's page-view. The Google Tool Bar can block most website generated pop-up ads. However, the Google Toolbar cannot block pop-ups that are created by viruses or spyware.

Spyware refers to a wide range of related software products that can perform many different functions, including the delivery of unrequested advertising (pop-up ads in particular), harvesting private information, re-routing web page requests, and installing stealth phone dialers.

Spyware can closely resemble computer viruses, but with some important differences. A virus replicates itself: it spreads copies of itself to other computers if it can. Spyware generally does not replicate itself.

To avoid spyware issues altogether, computer users should refrain from installing any piece of software that seems too good to be true. Spybot and Ad-Aware are two good programs that can remove most spyware from a computer.
Why can't I connect to the Internet?
There are a wide variety of reasons that your computer may not connect to the Internet.

• Check the password. Retype your password, make sure your caps lock is not on.

• Check the telephone jack, try plugging a telephone into the computer to get dial tone, make sure the line cord is plugged into the right jack on the back of the PC, try a new line cord, make sure you don't have stutter dial tone from voicemail messages.

• Check the telephone number your computer is dialing, don't dial the area code 715.
Why do I keep getting disconnected from the Internet?
Frequent Disconnects can also be caused by a wide variety of reasons.

• Phone Line Noise - If you have static on your telephone line, your Internet connection will not work efficiently. Please contact Lakeland Communications.

• Call-Waiting - Some modems will disconnect when the call waiting beep/noise is played over the phone line when an incoming call rings. You may need to disable call waiting when your computer connects to the internet

• Your modem could have been damaged perhaps during a lightning storm.
How can I protect my computer from lightning?
When storms are in your area it is important to disconnect from the internet and turn your computer off. To completely protect your computer, it is advised to completely unplug your computers power cables from the wall outlet.

Also it is advisable to unplug the telephone line from the wall jack as well if you computer connects to the internet via your telephone line. Most users forget this step and their modem is damaged by a lightning strike.

Once your computer is completely unplugged it should be relatively safe from potential power surges across the power lines and telephone lines in your home.

After the storm has passed you can then plug in your computer's power and telephone line and use your computer as normal.
